May is National Bike to Work Month.   In 2018, Bike to Work Week will be May 14-18, with Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 19.

Whether you bike to work or school; ride to save money or time; pump those pedals to preserve your health or the environment; or simply to explore your community, National Bike Month is an opportunity to celebrate the unique power of the bicycle and the many reasons to ride.

One of the greatest benefits of biking to work is that you may live longer.  In fact, a newspaper article entitled  You May Live Longer if You Bike to Work reported the findings of a  British Medical Journal study that followed more than 260,000 people over five years and found cycle commuters had a 46 percent lower risk of developing heart disease and a 52 percent lower risk of dying from it.

40% of all trips in the U.S. are less than two miles, making bicycling a feasible and fun way to get to work. With increased interest in healthy, sustainable and economic transportation options, it’s not surprising that, from 2000 to 2013, the number of bicycle commuters in the U.S. grew by more than 62 percent.

Downtown Vernal Moves Towards Being More Bike Friendly

Most people don’t know it, but there has been ample bicycle parking in downtown Vernal for years.  However, the existing bike racks were hard to recognize because they were mat black and blended into the landscape.  This past week, volunteers took the downtown and gave those bike racks a facelift, painting them and making them more visible to would-be bikers.
